5 Heatless Overnight Hairstyles for Gorgeous Waves and Vintage Curls

When it comes to achieving beautiful curls and waves without the damage of hot tools, heatless overnight hairstyles are your best friend. Whilst heat styling is optimal  and a timesaver for special occasions, it’s  overnight heatless styles that you want to master for everyday styling. Not only do they protect your hair from breakage, but they also save you time in the morning. I grew up with them — my mum used to tie my hair in rags on Saturday nights so I could wake up with soft curls for church on Sunday mornings. She much preferred these over the wild riot of my naturally curly hair. These timeless, no-heat methods are still some of the best ways to get gorgeous results overnight.

1. Classic Braids

I used to do these as a teenager to get those beach wave looks rather than my natural curls

How to do it:

  • Start with damp (not wet) hair.
  • Divide your hair into 1–4 braids depending on how tight you want your waves.
  • Secure the ends with soft elastics and leave them in overnight.

The results:

  • 1 braid = loose, beachy waves.
  • 2 braids = natural, uniform texture.
  • 4+ braids = tighter, crimp-style waves.

Pro tip: Apply a light mousse or leave-in conditioner before braiding to help set the waves and keep them frizz-free.

2. Robe Tie or Sock Curls

How to do it:

  • Place a robe tie, sock, or curling rod across the top of your head like a crown.
  • Wrap small sections of damp hair around it, working away from the face.
  • Secure the ends with scrunchies and sleep comfortably.

The results:

  • Big, soft curls with plenty of volume.
  • A glamorous, heat-free alternative to curling wands.

Pro tip: For extra hold, lightly mist your hair with a texturising spray before wrapping.

3. Twist Buns (a.k.a. Space Buns)

How to do it:

  • Part your damp hair down the middle.
  • Twist each section into a bun (high or low, depending on comfort).
  • Secure with soft scrunchies and leave overnight.

The results:

  • Loose, bouncy curls with extra lift at the roots.
  • One bun = softer curls. Two buns = more curl and volume.

Pro tip: Use a silk scrunchie to avoid dents and breakage.

4. Rag Curls (Vintage Classic)

How to do it:

  • Cut strips of soft fabric (old t-shirts or cotton rags work best).
  • Wrap small sections of damp hair around each strip and tie the ends into a knot to secure.
  • Sleep in them overnight, just like our grandmothers used to do.

The results:

  • Defined, springy curls with a vintage feel.
  • A nostalgic method that still works beautifully today.

Pro tip: The softer the fabric, the more comfortable your sleep will be. Use smaller strips for tighter curls and larger strips for looser waves.

5. Pin Curls

How to do it:

  • Take small sections of damp hair, twist or roll them into flat spirals against your scalp.
  • Secure each curl with a bobby pin or clip.
  • Cover with a silk scarf or bonnet before sleeping.

The results:

  • Glamorous, vintage-inspired curls with lots of definition.
  • The tighter the section, the smaller and bouncier the curl.

Pro tip: For extra hold, spritz each section with a setting spray before pinning.

Bonus Tips for Heatless Overnight Styling

  • Sleep smart: Use a silk pillowcase or bonnet to reduce frizz and help your curls last longer.
  • Timing matters: Always start with slightly damp, not soaking wet hair. Wet hair may not fully dry overnight and could go limp.
  • Morning refresh: In the morning, gently shake out your curls, run your fingers through them, and finish with a light texturising spray or serum for shine.

✨ With these five easy styles (from modern braids to nostalgic rag and pin curls), you can wake up with effortless, healthy, and gorgeous waves — no heat required!
